There is an abundance of fantastic day trip options on offer from Hobart. Here are our top five-day trips from The Old Woolstore.

Cradle Mountain

Top of many people's bucket list is a visit to Cradle Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This place needs to be experienced to be believed. With state-of-the-art facilities, a gorgeous village, and exceptional alpine wilderness, you will not be disappointed. The Derwent Experience runs small group day tours from The Old Woolstore to Cradle Mountain. Travel through scenic Tasmania with breakfast and dinner in Deloraine and up to 5 hours in Cradle Mountain National Park - plenty of time for a big hike and to see the highlights.

kunyani/Mount Wellington

Rising majestically above Hobart, kunyani/Mount Wellington becomes a winter wonderland during the off-season months. Take a 20-minute scenic drive to the summit, where breathtaking panoramic views await. Build a snowman, have a snowball fight, take Instagram-worthy photos, or simply absorb the serenity. For adventure enthusiasts, alpine hiking trails offer a refreshing experience where spectacular lookouts, dramatic cliff faces, boulder fields, waterfalls, fern glades, and unique dolerite rock formations await.

You can take a guided tour with our friends at Walk on Kunyani to make the most of your time.

Mt Field National Park and Russell Falls

Mount Field National Park is one of Tasmania's oldest national parks and is easy access from Hobart. With its diversity of vegetation, alpine wilderness, numerous glacial lakes, and prolific wildlife, the national park is a satisfying day trip for all ages.

A short drive from Hobart through the picturesque Derwent Valley offers many opportunities to explore local hospitality, heritage, and quaint country villages.

The winter season is a spectacular time of year to experience the national park. With snow-capped mountains, frozen lakes (perfect for skimming ice chips), and the breathtaking Russell Falls, full from melted snow.

The national park has accessible options for different levels of mobility and offers a range of experiences to suit novices to seasoned outdoor adventurers.

Southern Lights Spectacular

As one of the best locations to witness the extraordinary Southern Lights, Hobart provides a front-row seat to one of nature's most breathtaking displays.

Like its northern counterpart, the Aurora Borealis, the Aurora Australis results from solar activity interacting with the Earth's magnetic field. The resulting energy translates into a brightly glowing light show, lasting for minutes and sometimes reappearing over several days, with colours ranging from red, pink, and purple to green, yellow, or blue.

Several tour operators offer guided trips to prime viewing spots around Hobart, and there are also several apps available that can help you stay updated and increase your chances of witnessing this fantastic natural phenomenon.

Maria Island

If you love native animals and pristine environments, Maria Island is a must-do day trip from Hobart. Located 70 minutes from the CBD along the stunning East Coast, the Island is car-free and can be reached by ferry from Triabunna.

With untouched beaches, rugged coastlines, historical ruins, ancient forests, and abundant wildlife, Maria Island is the whole package. Did you know it’s one of the best places to spot a wombat in the wild? If you seek a tranquil atmosphere and a connection with nature, don’t miss this beautiful island gem.

If you would like something more, you can try a guided tree day walk at Maria Island with our friends at Winter Escape Walk - Maria Island Walk.
