How to Plan Your Weekend Break in Hobart, Tasmania

Hobart is renowned for its beautiful historic architecture, exquisite natural scenery, amazing local food, a thriving cafe scene and one of the world’s best (or at least most unique) museums. Here are some of the highlights for your itinerary if you are visiting for the weekend.

Street Eats @ Franko

If you’re arriving on a Friday night between November and April, be sure to check out Street Eats @ Franko for live music and great food on the grassy Franklin Square in Hobart’s CBD. This eclectic, weekly mini-festival is a great way to get a feel for the city as you enjoy good local food on a picnic blanket.

Salamanca Markets and Surrounds

Salamanca Market is a weekly market in Salamanca Place, Hobart showcasing local Tasmanian produce and products. It’s open from 8.30am to 3pm every Saturday. It’s best to go earlier to beat the crowd as it gets very busy towards midday. The surrounds of Salamanca Place are gorgeous with it’s elegant Georgian sandstone buildings and the distant mountains. Take your time walking in to galleries, shops, eateries or just soaking up the atmosphere over a beer or wine.

Battery Point

Take a pleasant walk or drive around historic Battery Point, Hobart’s oldest suburb. Originally the site of the city’s military defences, it’s full of quaint historic cottages, cobbled lanes and pretty parks. Pop in to a boutique shop or simply relax with a coffee or meal from one of it’s eateries.

kunanyi/Mount Wellington

At 1,271m tall, kunanyi/Mount Wellington towers over Hobart, offering beautiful, panoramic views. Since it’s so high, it is often covered in snow. There is a spectacular lookout at the top and plenty of great walking and bike trails. The 3 hour Organ Pipes walk is a popular classic. Even if you aren’t a hiker, it’s worth spending a bit of time at the top to take in the stunning views of Greater Hobart. Pack a jacket as it can get chilly at the summit!

MONA

If you travel to Hobart, you can’t miss MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). It’s a unique art museum full of interesting and sometimes confronting art. You’ll find everything from ancient Egyptian art to immersive audio-visual experiences across three floors. The architecture and surrounds of MONA itself are also absolutely stunning. Plan to spend around 3 to 4 hours to see it all. You won’t be disappointed.
